Usage Note

Sustitución refers to the act of replacing one thing or person with another. In sport, hacer una sustitución means to make a substitution (bring on a player). The verb is sustituir (class -uir, irregular). In Spain both sustitución and substitución are found; the RAE currently prefers sustitución, but s- is dominant.
