Sustancioso can describe food that is rich and filling (un guiso sustancioso) or, more abstractly, content that has real depth and value (una conversación sustanciosa). It is related to sustancia ('substance'). Unlike the English 'substantial', it rarely refers to large physical size alone; it stresses nutritional or intellectual richness.
