soportar

to bear

verb soh-pohr-TAHR Less Common

Also means

to support

Usage Note

Soportar is a false friend: it does NOT mean 'to support' in the sense of backing or helping someone — that is apoyar. Soportar means to tolerate, endure, or physically bear a load (las columnas soportan el techo). The most common use for learners is the expression no soporto ('I can't stand it / I can't bear it'). For technical support, Spanish uses soporte técnico as a noun, where the false-friend danger disappears.

Examples

"No soporto el ruido del tráfico."

Natural Translation

I can't stand the noise of traffic.
