Usage Note
Sobreponer has two distinct uses: to place one thing on top of another (to superimpose), and — most commonly in the reflexive form sobreponerse a algo — to overcome or rise above a difficulty or emotional setback. The reflexive construction is far more frequent in everyday speech: se sobrepuso al dolor (she overcame the pain).
