Sobrepasar means to go beyond a limit or to surpass someone in quantity or performance: sobrepasar el límite de velocidad ('to exceed the speed limit'). It is a regular -ar verb. Near-synonyms include superar (to overcome/surpass) and exceder; sobrepasar emphasises crossing a quantitative threshold more than personal achievement.
