Sentimental is a cognate but carries a slightly stronger connotation of being overly emotional or nostalgic than in English. The phrase ponerse sentimental means 'to get sentimental' or 'to get emotional'. It does not change form for masculine/feminine (una canción sentimental, un hombre sentimental).
