seguir

to continue

verb seh-GEER Common

Also means

to keep on

Usage Note

Seguir means to follow (sigue la flecha — follow the arrow) as well as to continue or keep doing something when followed by a gerund: sigue hablando (keep talking / he is still talking). This seguir + gerund construction expresses that an action is ongoing and is one of the most natural ways to say 'still doing something' in Spanish. It is a stem-changing verb (e→i in present: sigo, sigues, sigue…).

Examples

"Sigue recto hasta el semáforo."

Natural Translation

Keep straight ahead to the traffic light.

Literal Translation

It-continues straight until the traffic-light
