Usage Note

Sagrado applies to people, places, texts, and concepts regarded as divinely set apart (la Biblia sagrada, tierra sagrada). It also appears idiomatically to mean something inviolable: su tiempo libre es sagrado ('his free time is sacred'). Modern usage prefers lugar sagrado or santuario for a holy place.
