Usage Note

Sólo (adverb, 'only') was traditionally written with an accent to distinguish it from solo (adjective, 'alone/solo'), but the Real Academia Española ruled in 2010 that the accent is now optional. Many editors and writers still use it to avoid ambiguity. The adverb is a close synonym of solamente, which is unambiguous in all contexts.
