Relegar follows the spelling rule of verbs ending in -gar: the g becomes gu before e (relegué, relegues). It means to push someone or something to a lower position or to the margins — a player relegated to the bench, a topic relegated to a footnote. In sports journalism descender is the more common word for a team being relegated to a lower division.
