Usage Note

Relato covers both a factual account or report and a short narrative/story. In literary usage relato corto is a short story, roughly equivalent to a cuento though relato can feel slightly more literary or journalistic. Un relato de los hechos is 'an account of the events'. Do not confuse with relación which also means 'account' but more formally, or 'relationship'.
