Usage Note

Acentuar is spelled with a written accent in forms where the u is stressed: acentúo, acentúas, acentúa, acentúan. It is used both literally (to write an accent mark) and figuratively (to highlight a feature). The reflexive acentuarse means 'to become more pronounced,' as in la crisis se acentuó.
