Receloso describes a person (or animal) who is guarded and mistrustful, expecting deception or harm. It is stronger than desconfiado and implies an active alertness: un perro receloso eyes strangers suspiciously. The noun recelo means suspicion or wariness, and the verb recelar means to be wary of something.
