Usage Note
Protestante functions as both adjective and noun (un protestante, 'a Protestant'). It has no change of form between masculine and feminine — la iglesia protestante, el pastor protestante. It derives from the 16th-century political protest (Protestatio) of German princes against Catholic imperial decrees.
