Usage Note
Prominente can describe physical protrusion (una roca prominente) or figurative importance and high profile (una figura prominente del partido). It is invariable for gender. Its opposite in the figurative sense is desconocido or oscuro. The noun form prominencia is used in anatomy (a bony prominence) and geology.
