Usage Note

Prohibir has a written accent on the i in most conjugated forms to show that the i is stressed separately from o (prohíbo, prohíbes, prohíbe). It is stronger and more official than no dejar (not to let). The past participle prohibido appears on signs: prohibido fumar (no smoking).
