Usage Note

Profesional is invariable for gender and adds -es in the plural. As a noun it means a professional person (es un profesional, he is a professional). It contrasts with aficionado (amateur). In sport, profesional distinguishes paid from amateur athletes. The adverb is profesionalmente and the noun profesionalidad (professionalism).
