Usage Note
Penalti is the Hispanicised spelling recommended by the RAE over the older anglicism penalty. It is llana, stressed on the second syllable (peh-NAHL-tee), and refers to the penalty kick in football and, by extension, to any penalty situation in sport. In some Latin American countries the esdrújula variant pénalti is also heard; the plural is penaltis.
