penalty (kick)

noun peh-NAHL-tee Less Common

Origin: Borrowed from English 'penalty'.

Usage Note

It is llana, stressed on the second syllable (peh-NAHL-tee), and refers to the penalty kick in football and, by extension, to any penalty situation in sport. In some Latin American countries the esdrújula variant pénalti is also heard; the plural is penaltis.

Examples

"El delantero falló el penalti."
