par

pair

noun PAHR Less Common

Origin: From Latin par, 'equal'.

Usage Note

Par means a matched pair (un par de zapatos = 'a pair of shoes') and, as an adjective or noun, 'even' in number (número par). In golf it is borrowed directly as 'par'. The phrase sin par means 'unparalleled' or 'matchless'. Don't confuse with pared (wall) — the final r is always pronounced.
