Cantidad is often used as an informal intensifier in colloquial Spanish: cantidad de gente ('loads of people') or even the adverb cantidad alone (me gusta cantidad = 'I love it a lot'). In formal or technical contexts it means a precise measurable amount. Note that cantidades can refer to sums of money (una gran cantidad de dinero), making it partially overlap with suma.
