palacio

palace

noun pah-LAH-syoh Less Common

Origin: From Latin Palatium, the hill in Rome where emperors built their residences.

Usage Note

Palacio refers both to royal or official government buildings and to large stately mansions. In Spain, el Palacio de la Moncloa is the prime minister's official residence, and el Palacio Real is the royal palace in Madrid. It should not be confused with paladar ('palate'), a similar-sounding but unrelated word.
