abadía

abbey

noun ah-bah-DEE-ah Rare

Origin: from Medieval Latin abbatia, from abbās (abbot)

Usage Note

Abadía is both the building complex and the monastic community it houses, presided over by an abad (abbot) or abadesa (abbess). It is larger and more autonomous than a convento or monasterio. The accent on the final -ía is regular for the pattern and must not be omitted.
