Origin: From Latin notarius (secretary, shorthand writer).

Usage Note

Notario in Spanish-speaking countries is a legally trained professional with much greater authority than a typical Anglo-Saxon notary: they authenticate contracts, deeds, wills, and other legal documents with full legal standing. The feminine form is notaria. The office is called notaría.
