mirar

to look at, to watch

verb mee-RAHR Less Common

Usage Note

Mirar means to look at something deliberately (mira ese cuadro), whereas ver means to see passively (veo la televisión). In the imperative, ¡mira! / ¡miren! functions as 'look!' to draw attention. Mirar takes a direct object without a preposition (mira la pantalla), unlike buscar, which also takes a direct object but for a different action.

Examples

"Los niños miraban el cielo con asombro."

Natural Translation

The children looked at the sky in amazement.
