Usage Note

Medieval is invariable in gender — el período medieval, la arquitectura medieval. It spans roughly the 5th to 15th centuries. In informal speech it can be used hyperbolically to mean 'backward' or 'old-fashioned', e.g. Esas ideas son medievales ('Those ideas are medieval/backward').
