licenciar

to license, to graduate

verb lee-sen-SYAHR Rare

Origin: From Latin licentia (permission).

Also means

to discharge (from military service)

Usage Note

Licenciar has two common uses: granting a licence or degree, and releasing soldiers from military duty. The reflexive licenciarse is the standard way to say 'to graduate' from university in Spain: se licenció en Derecho ('she graduated in Law'). In Latin America graduarse is more common for university graduation.

Examples

"Se licenció en Filosofía el año pasado."

Natural Translation

He graduated in Philosophy last year.
