licenciado

graduate

noun lee-sen-SYAH-doh Rare

Also means

lawyer (honorific)

Usage Note

Licenciado primarily denotes a university graduate holding a licenciatura (bachelor's or equivalent degree). In Mexico and several Latin American countries it also functions as a formal honorific for lawyers and professionals, used in address like Licenciado García. The feminine is licenciada. In modern Spain, the old licenciatura has largely been replaced by the Bologna grado, so the title is becoming less common there.

Examples

"El licenciado firmó los documentos del contrato."

Natural Translation

The graduate signed the contract documents.
