Intriga covers both the abstract sense of mystery or intrigue and a concrete scheme or plot (la intriga de la novela = the plot of the novel). The related verb intrigar means both 'to intrigue' (fascinate) and 'to scheme.' A novela de intriga is a thriller — a common genre label in Spanish bookshops.
