importante

important

adjective eem-pohr-TAHN-teh Common

Usage Note

Importante is invariable in gender (el factor importante, la decisión importante). It is used with ser rather than estar, since it describes an inherent quality rather than a temporary state. The related verb importar can mean both 'to be important' (no importa, 'it doesn't matter') and 'to import goods' — two very different meanings sharing one form.

Examples

"Es muy importante llegar a tiempo."

Natural Translation

It is very important to arrive on time.
