horror

noun oh-RROHR Rare

Also means

dread

Usage Note

Horror functions both as an uncountable abstract (el horror de la guerra) and a countable noun for something horrifying (un horror). In informal speech, ¡qué horror! is an exclamation of dismay (roughly 'how awful!'). The compound película de horror (or de terror) means 'horror film'; both prepositions are used, but terror is more common in film titles.

Examples

"El niño gritó de horror al ver la araña."

Natural Translation

The child screamed in horror upon seeing the spider.
