hippy

hippie

adjective EE-pee Rare

Origin: English loanword

Usage Note

Hippy (also spelled hippie in Spanish) is a borrowing from English that functions as both adjective and noun in Spanish, following the common pattern for cultural loanwords. As an adjective it is invariable in gender (un chico hippy, una chica hippy) though it takes a plural hippies. In Spain it strongly evokes the 1960s-70s counterculture, but it also survives as a mild descriptor for a free-spirited, bohemian lifestyle today.

Examples

"Tenía un aspecto muy hippy."

Natural Translation

He had a very hippie look.
