hachís

hashish

noun hah-CHEES Rare

Origin: From Arabic ḥashīsh (dried herb).

Usage Note

Hachís keeps its Arabic origin transparently, and the initial h is aspirated (sounded, not silent). It is invariable in the plural (los hachís) and always masculine. In Spain it is a common term for this substance; in Latin America marihuana is more usual for cannabis generally.

Examples

"El hachís es una sustancia controlada."
