hacia

towards

preposition AH-syah Common

Also means

around (approximate time)

Usage Note

Hacia expresses direction ('towards') and approximate time ('around, about'): hacia las tres ('around three o'clock'). It is written without an accent, unlike the verb form hacía (imperfect of hacer). In formal registers it can also convey attitude: su actitud hacia el trabajo ('their attitude towards work').

Examples

"Caminamos hacia el mar."

We walked towards the sea.
