Usage Note
Hacha is feminine but takes the masculine article el in the singular (el hacha) to avoid the hiatus of la hacha — the same rule that gives us el agua and el alma. In the plural, feminine agreement returns: las hachas. Colloquially, calling someone un hacha (note masculine) means they are highly skilled or 'an ace' at something — a complimentary use that is completely unrelated to the tool.
