Usage Note

Genérico means 'not specific to one thing', covering both the everyday sense (a generic product, i.e. a store brand without a name) and the linguistic sense (a generic term covering a whole class). In pharmacy medicamento genérico (generic drug) is the standard term contrasting with a medicamento de marca (branded drug). The noun genérico also refers to the opening credits sequence of a TV show or film in Spanish media.
