Usage Note

Gas is a loanword whose plural is gases (not gasses). In everyday speech it often means cooking or heating gas (gas natural), while gasolina (or nafta in Argentina) is the word for petrol/gasoline. In Mexico and parts of Latin America gas can also mean flatulence in informal speech.
