extrañar

to miss

verb eks-trah-NYAHR Rare

Also means

to surprise

Usage Note

Extrañar has two distinct uses: in Latin America it primarily means to miss someone or something absent (te extraño mucho = I miss you a lot), which is the dominant meaning in most of the Spanish-speaking world. In Spain, echar de menos is preferred for 'to miss', and extrañar tends to mean 'to find strange' or 'to surprise' (me extraña que no haya llamado = it surprises me that he hasn't called). Both senses appear across all registers.

Examples

"Te extraño mucho desde que te fuiste."

Natural Translation

I miss you a lot since you left.
