Usage Note

Estimar covers both the intellectual sense (to estimate a value: se estima que son dos millones) and the emotional sense (to hold in esteem: te estimo mucho). The latter sense is warmer than respetar but less intense than querer. In formal and academic writing se estima que (it is estimated that) is very common as an impersonal construction.
