ejercer

to exercise

verb eh-hehr-SEHR Less Common

Also means

to practise

Usage Note

Ejercer means to exercise or wield something abstract — a profession, power, an influence — rather than physical exercise (for that, Spanish uses hacer ejercicio). A common collocation is ejercer de médico (to work as a doctor) or ejercer presión (to exert pressure). The spelling changes to ejerzo in the first-person present to preserve the soft 's' sound.

Examples

"Lleva diez años ejerciendo la medicina."

Natural Translation

She has been practising medicine for ten years.

Literal Translation

Carries ten years practicing the medicine
