durante

during; for (a period of time)

preposition doo-RAHN-teh Common

Origin: From the Latin present participle of durare 'to last'.

Usage Note

Durante expresses the duration or timeframe within which something happens: durante la guerra 'during the war', durante tres horas 'for three hours'. Unlike desde hace, durante does not imply the action is still ongoing — it describes a completed or defined span. It originated as the ablative of a present participle, which is why it ends in -te rather than the usual preposition pattern.

Examples

"Dormí durante ocho horas."

Natural Translation

I slept for eight hours.
