Dolor covers both physical pain (dolor de cabeza — headache) and emotional anguish (el dolor de la pérdida). It is masculine: el dolor, not la dolor. The verb doler follows the gustar pattern: me duele la espalda ('my back hurts'). The adjective doloroso means 'painful'.
