Usage Note

Dióxido almost always appears in the compound dióxido de carbono (carbon dioxide). The accent on the o is essential — dioxido without the accent would misplace the stress. In chemistry, óxido alone means 'oxide', and dióxido specifically indicates two oxygen atoms bonded to another element.
