Usage Note

Despreciar means to hold someone or something in contempt, stronger than merely disliking. The noun desprecio (contempt, scorn) is closely related. It differs from menospreciar, which emphasises undervaluing rather than active contempt. Using despreciar of a person implies a cutting dismissal that can cause real offence.
