Usage Note

Descargar originally meant 'to unload cargo' and that sense is still active (descargar un camión). In modern usage it most commonly means 'to download' a file. It also means 'to discharge' a weapon or a battery (la batería se descargó). The spelling change g → gu before -e preserves the hard /g/ sound in conjugations like descargué.
