desahogar

to vent

verb deh-sah-oh-GAHR Rare

Also means

to relieve (pressure)

Usage Note

Desahogar is built from des- (un-) + ahogar (to drown/choke), so it literally means 'to un-choke'. The reflexive desahogarse is the most common form and means to unburden oneself — to let off emotional steam, usually by talking. Note the spelling change before e: desahogue (subjunctive/imperative).

Examples

"Necesitaba desahogarse con alguien de confianza."

Natural Translation

She needed to vent to someone she trusted.
