Usage Note

Deplorar expresses strong disapproval or grief over something — governments deploran acts of violence, speakers deploran the decline of civil discourse. It is more formal than lamentar and carries a stronger moral condemnation. The adjective deplorable (deplorable) is widely used in both Spanish and English with the same sense.
