cuarenta

forty

numeral kwah-REHN-tah Less Common

Usage Note

Cuarenta forms compounds with y and a unit digit: cuarenta y uno, cuarenta y dos, etc. — unlike the 20s, these are always written as three separate words. The cultural phrase la cuarentena ('quarantine') originally referred to a 40-day isolation period, reflecting the number's historical resonance. In tennis scoring, cuarenta corresponds to the '40' point.

Examples

"Mi padre tiene cuarenta años."
