corte

cut

noun KOHR-teh Less Common

Also means

court (royal), corte (judicial)

Usage Note

Corte is masculine when it means a cut or incision (el corte de pelo = haircut), but feminine when it refers to a royal or judicial court (la Corte Suprema, la corte del rey). This gender split from the same spelling is one of the trickier points in Spanish. In Spain, las Cortes (always plural, feminine) is the national parliament.

Examples

"Se hizo un corte en el dedo."

Natural Translation

He got a cut on his finger.

Literal Translation

Oneself made a cut in the finger
