Corregimiento was the basic administrative division of colonial Spanish America, headed by a corregidor. Today it survives as a sub-municipal administrative unit in Panama and Colombia. The term is chiefly historical in Spain and most other Spanish-speaking countries, where other territorial divisions (municipio, parroquia) have replaced it.
