Contento is used with estar (not ser) because it describes a temporary emotional state: estoy contento (I am happy right now). It agrees in gender and number: estoy contenta, están contentos. It is less intense than feliz — contento implies satisfied or pleased, while feliz suggests deep or lasting happiness.
